Lake Iseo is the 4th largest lake in the Italian region of Lombardy. The fact that it is not yet widely known is a great asset to those who wish to celebrate their event there. The lake is approximately 24 km’s long and as wide as 5 km’s in certain parts.
The lake boasts the largest inhabited lake island in Europe, the beautiful Monte Isola which can easily be reached by ferry The island has no cars, there are the occasional local public buses which can take you up to the top. It is charming, peaceful and also a perfect location for walking and cycling. The population of this island is approximately 1700.
What makes Lake Iseo such a diverse and interesting place to visit is that the Western bank of the lake is administered by Bergamo district council, promoting the incredibly beautiful City of Bergamo itself, with its medieval gem the Citta Alta (or high town). The towns of Sarnico, Predore, Tavernola and Lovere sprinkled along the western bank of the lake burst with history and culture .
The Eastern bank of the lake is administered by the district council of Brescia. This region boasts the atmospheric sophisticated lively town of Iseo, brimming with shops, restaurants and bars, situated by the stunning lakeside, It has a bustling market every Friday. Enjoy mingling with the locals as you promenade leisurely along, soaking up the breathtaking views of the lake with its backdrop of lush mountains.
The magnificent and picturesque region of Franciacorta which in fact is the 3rd major wine producing region in Italy and produces some very respectable wines is the place to visit. There are approximately 70 wineries in the zone including Berlucchi, producers of arguably the best Italian sparkling wines, and the Ca’del Bosco, recognised as national leaders in quality and prestige wine lovers may wish to visit the area for a few days in September for the annual wine festival, with tasting and visits to wine cellars.
The lake is easily accessed and serviced by Bergamo, Orio Serio, airport which is only a short 30 minute drive away. Milan, Malpensa and Linate airports are approx 1 hour’s drive away. Also within easy reach of this stunning lake are the city’s of Milan (1 hour), Verona (1 hour), Venice (3 hours) Lake Garda (1 hour), Lake Como (90 mins).
